Is there an advantage in having the ball on the sideline on the fast break rather than in the middle of the court?

I have seen coaches teach the fast break by letting the wing advance the ball down the sideline after crossing midcourt. The standard vertical fast break defense has to make a decision they normally don't have to make. As with any idea, it is best not to reject it until you experiment with it.

In my coaching, I taught the standard ball in the middle break; however, on occasion when one of my wings advanced the ball down the sideline, our standard back defense did NOT know what to do, because we had not practiced it defensively. I think the ball down the sideline is something to consider in a fast break attack.
